ST is the first manufacturer to propose a power Schottky diode in an SMC package able to withstand 5 A. Previously, the choice was either 3 A in an SMC or 5 A in an axial package.
This gives the benefit of package size, which is an important factor when designing compact DC-to-DC converters.
The forward voltage drop (Vf) of 0.42 V at 5 A and 125 °C to minimize power losses allows the footprint to be used as the heatsink with or without vias.
