Energy saving AC-DC converters
While technological progress has helped improve the quality of our lives, it has led to a dramatic increase in energy consumption. Besides developing renewable sources of energy, the management of the power we consume through more efficient systems is crucial for our future. The creation of a new generation of ACDC converters forms part of ST’s extensive program for creating devices that reduce power consumption and increase efficiency.
Essential in powering the majority of equipment plugged into the mains, ST’s new converters overperform the most demanding energy saving regulations such as Code of Conduct, Top-Runner, Energy Star, Energy 2000, 85+, 92+ and EPA4.

When every milliwatt counts


It has been estimated that ST’s innovative solutions saved around 1250 GW hours in 2006, and 20% more in 2007; equivalent to 3 thermoelectric power stations. Other derivative benefits are:
Power supply weight and dimensions: 20% less
Use of difficult-to-recycle materials and chemicals: 15% less
Around 10% less heat generated and temperature on critical power components reduced as much as 30% Cost of ownership lowered and lifetime of the equipment prolonged by 20 to 25%

New SMPS solutions for LCD/PDP TVs


An example of one of ST’s architectural solutions developed to markedly improve energy management in LCD TVs is composed of a front-end PFC, implementing the state-of-the-art L6563 and a resonant DC-DC converter based on the advanced L6599 controller for LCD/PDP TVs. This solution enables:
